Fishing on the Winnipeg River
Looking for great fishing near Kenora without heading deep into big open water? The Winnipeg River offers easy access to walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, perch, muskie, and more.

Why Fish the Winnipeg River Instead of Lake of the Woods?
For many anglers, the Winnipeg River is a smart alternative to fishing Lake of the Woods. You still get the same Northwestern Ontario scenery, multi-species fishing, and access to water near Kenora, but the experience can feel more direct and easier to plan. Lake of the Woods is famous for its scale and 14,542 islands, while the Kenora area also includes thousands of other fishable lakes and rivers. For groups who want to get lines in quickly, the Winnipeg River offers a strong mix of convenience, variety, and less big-water decision-making.
Perch Bay is especially well positioned for this. The resort sits on the Winnipeg River about 1 kilometre below Norman Dam, and its boat rentals page notes that within about five minutes by boat, anglers can reach fishing for species ranging from walleye and bass to northern pike, muskie, and sturgeon.
What Fish Can You Catch in the Winnipeg River?
The Winnipeg River near Kenora is a strong multi-species fishery. At Perch Bay you can catch a variety of species, like walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, muskie, sturgeon, and perch. Visit Kenora describes the wider Kenora area as home to walleye, northern pike, lake trout, small and largemouth bass, muskie, perch, sauger, and whitefish.
If you’re planning a classic guys’ fishing trip, walleye will usually be one of the main draws. Many of our guests catch walleye right in the bay in front of the resort. Northern pike are plentiful in the area, and the rocky, bay-filled structure of the river makes it a natural fit for smallmouth bass. If your group likes the possibility of a bigger challenge, muskie and the occasional sturgeon add that extra layer of excitement.
Can You Fish Right Off the Dock at Perch Bay?
Yes! And that’s one of the best parts of staying here. Guests can fish right off the dock, we've seen a very high success rate for catching fish right from the docks, which is great for families with kids. You can fish the bay directly in front of the resort or head upriver toward Norman Dam for more action.
Boat Rentals, Bait, Gas, and Fishing Trip Essentials
One reason this area works so well for fishing trips is convenience. Perch Bay offers boat and motor rentals for resort guests, along with a boat launch, bait, lures, fishing gear, gas, and licence sales on site. Life vests, safety equipment, and the first 25 litres of gas are included with rentals.
You do not need to piece your trip together from three or four different places once you get to Kenora. If you’re bringing your own boat, you can launch and get on the water quickly.
Important Fishing Regulations for the Winnipeg River
Before heading out, anglers should always check the current Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary. The Kenora area falls within Fisheries Management Zone 5, and rules can vary by species, season, size limits, sanctuaries, and waterbody exceptions.
Licence requirements also matter, especially for guests driving up from the United States. Ontario says non-residents of Canada age 18 and older generally need both an Outdoors Card and a valid fishing licence, though a one-day sport fishing licence is available without an Outdoors Card, and an eight-day licence is also available for eligible non-resident anglers.
Stay Close to the Water at Perch Bay Resort
If the goal is to maximize fishing time, staying on the river makes a big difference. Perch Bay is minutes from downtown Kenora but right on the Winnipeg River, with fishing access in front of the resort and quick runs to more spots nearby. That makes it a great choice for weekend trips, multi-day fishing getaways, and U.S. visitors who want an easy basecamp with cabins, rentals, fuel, and supplies all in one place.
After a full day on the water, it also helps to come back to a warm cabin instead of packing up and driving back into town.
